“True silence is the rest of the mind; it is to the spirit what sleep is to the body, nourishment and refreshment.” - Unknown
Why the fascination with silence? Why the encouragement to meditate and take moments of stillness throughout the day? It is simple, so you can listen and hear your Self. Your EGO is loud and bossy and easily satiated with things, and fear and manipulation. It is hungry for attention and time and validation. I have said before that you are not your thoughts; you are that which observes your thoughts. You are the presence beyond the perpetual movement of your mind, the presence beyond the schedule, beyond your body and beyond the fear and your authentic presence unfolds when you are present to it – when you are silent. In the space of silence you can just be. There is no need for a story or a definition. You do not need to be right or wrong, strong or weak, good or bad – there is no need. This may sound esoteric, a little deep, even arcane, but try it. Sit for a moment and observe. Who is observing? Feel your heart beat a little faster. Notice the butterflies. Survey the thoughts. Notice that “you” are watching all of this.
I know many people are afraid of the silence as it can be a bit like stepping on a scale after a long, cold winter and an over-abundance of your favorite chips. It can be a bit shocking and disconcerting because the subconscious mind and ego has often been telling the genuine you lies; you are worthless or boring or unnecessary; keep up, put up and shut up, is often the running dialogue. Eventually when you listen, when you hear your own voice, it is a bit like trying to discern a foreign language because your true voice is the kindest, most gentle you will ever hear and it says, “You belong and all is well.” Separation and pain and the illusion of your ego suddenly fade and there you are. By gifting yourself moments of silence throughout the day, you will create awareness and reconnect with what is fundamentally important to you. Think of putting a child in time out, in silence. This is akin to your ego, a child, which occasionally needs a time out.
Whatever you call it: silence, consciousness, awareness, who am I, meditation, truth, stillness, The Self, it is not Christian, Muslim, Atheistic or Hindu. It has no dogma, no restrictions and no expectations. It is not New Age or hippie or strange. It is simply being present to your presence. What could be more nourishing than that?
In every silence there is truth and hope. Hold it and let it be, for all of life exists in this silence. For here you can find yourself, here you can listen to the divine and here is where you reside. In the silence you are present. In the silence you are alive. - Shawna Campbell

I have sat in silence and been astonished by who I am. I have sat in silence and been amazed at how it felt. I have sat in silence and felt totally alive and connected to the moment. Then I allowed my ego take over and push the silence away. Thanks for bringing it back to memory. I will make silence apart of my day.
